US Route 66

For those of you who don't really know a lot about US Route 66, it was one of the original of the official US Highways, established in 1926, and running from Chicago to Los Angeles. Over the years, it has affectionately become known as the "Mother Road".

Despite being officially dropped as a designated highway route in 1985, thanks to the newer Interstate Highway system, Route 66 still lives on today. The vast majority of the road exists under alternative state and local route numbers, and in recent years, efforts have been made to also signpost the old roads as Historic Route 66.

Originating in downtown Chicago, it seemed like the perfect choice for our road trip to see as much of America as we could.

The route covers 2600 miles across nine states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Our plan is to complete the journey in 14 days, including some added detours off the Mother Road to places like the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.
